Speeding in Ballinacarrow.
This year the school and Green School Committee have started work on our next theme which is Global Citizenship and Travel. The Committee have already carried out a walkability audit of the area and one of the issues highlighted in this was traffic speeding through the village.
On Monday 20th November the Green Schools Committee carried out their own speed test on vehicles with the help of the Green schools travel officer and a speed gun. The results were quite shocking . Out of 179 vehicles 94 were speeding, the speed limit is 50km/hr some of these vehicles were travelling at 79km/hr , 85km/hr was the fastest speed we detected.
The Committee are writing to the local councillor and the Gardaí to ask for their help in making Ballinacarrow a safer place for the children to walk. A sign that shows the speed of your vehicle as you enter the village may be more effective than the current signage. A garda presence may also help.
If any parents also wish to add their voices to our campaign then please feel free to use the information the children collected last Monday.
